Common Questions

WHAT IS A LIVE SCAN?

Live Scan is a specific type of background check that involves capturing an individual's fingerprints electronically and submitting them to a government agency or a designated Live Scan provider for a criminal history check. The process uses specialized equipment to scan the fingerprints, which are then transmitted to the appropriate agency for review.

A Live Scan report gives the requesting agency your Summary Criminal History Record and can also include your Federal Record. The Summary Criminal History Record is the criminal record kept by the California Department of Justice. This criminal history includes arrests, charges, dispositions, convictions, dismissals, diversions, identifying info (including fingerprints), “in custody” status if the person is in jail or prison, and a history of applications for certain licenses.  Live Scan reports can also give the requester subsequent notification if you are later arrested or convicted of a crime.

HOW FAR DOES CALIFORNIA LIVE SCAN GO BACK?

For most employment and licensing purposes, including those for working with children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, the DOJ and FBI limit the scope of their criminal history information to the past seven years.

The length of time that a Live Scan fingerprint background check goes back depends on the type of check being conducted and the agency or organization requesting the check.  However, certain types of criminal convictions, such as those for serious or violent felonies, may be reported for longer periods, including for life. Additionally, certain government agencies and law enforcement organizations may have broader access to criminal history information and may be able to obtain records that are not available to the general public or other organizations.

CAN YOUR LIVE SCAN FINGERPRINTS BE REJECTED?

Yes, it is rare but possible for your Live Scan fingerprints to be rejected. The Live Scan system is highly accurate, but there are several factors that can result in fingerprint rejections, including:

  1. Poor quality fingerprints: If the fingerprints captured by the Live Scan system are not adequate, they may be rejected.  However, Reliant does everything possible to transmit the best version of your prints as is possible.
  2. Incorrect information: If the information entered into the Live Scan system, such as your name, date of birth, or social security number, is incorrect, it can lead to a rejection.

If your Live Scan fingerprints are rejected, you will receive a notification from the agency or organization that requested the background check. You may need to schedule another appointment to have your fingerprints retaken, or you may be required to provide additional information or documentation to resolve the issue.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO DO A LIVE SCAN FINGERPRINTING IN CALIFORNIA?

Reliant fee for Live Scans is $40 and there are almost always ADDITIONAL government fees.

Click the GOVT FEES tab to learn more.

HOW LONG DOES A LIVE SCAN TAKE?

While appointments are scheduled at 30 minute intervals, if your fingers have good prints you could be leaving within 15 minutes.  More challenging prints take longer.

CAN THE LIVE SCAN OPERATOR SEE THE RESULTS OF THE BACKGROUND CHECK AND THEN SHOW IT TO ME?

No, neither Reliant nor you will see the results of your Live Scan background check. The results are sent directly to the requesting agency.

ARE YOU CALIFORNIA DOJ & FBI APPROVED?

Yes, absolutely.

WHAT FORM OF PAYMENTS DO YOU TAKE?
